5 Things To Do When You’re Planning A Home Renovation In 2022

Whether you’ve signed up for a gym membership, started planning a family vacation, or you’re pinning photos on Pinterest for your future home remodeling projects, there’s so much to do! But when it comes to your home renovation goals, we’ve got you covered with these 5 easy steps to get started on the right foot:
- Create a mood board for inspiration and decide which spaces you want to focus on.
This step is crucial because it’ll help you narrow down what exactly you want your home to look like in the end. Similar to how you can show your hairstylist a photo of what look you’re going for; you can also show your contractor what you’d like your home to look like! This will not only help YOU as you refine your taste and design style, but it also helped your contractor to clearly see your vision as well.
- Meet with licensed contractors to find out what your project will cost. (Do this step as soon as possible)
With your “mood board” in hand, meet with contractors and show them your ideas. They may want to do an in-home visit to measure, take photos and gather information about what you’re looking for. Keep in mind that if your project includes re-routing electrical work, gas or plumbing, you may be looking at a more costly renovation. The contractors should guide you and answer any immediate questions you have about the process. After your consultation, you can expect a rough estimate delivered to you within a week or two. - Select your contractor!
Now that you’ve done your research, received an estimate and spoken to various professionals in the industry, you can make the final selection on who you’re going to hire for the renovation. Make sure you’re hiring a licensed and insured company with longevity and a strong reputation. - Be prepared for a longer wait time for materials to arrive and labor to start.
This point is key in today’s world! Although you may want to get started right away on your home project, many reputable companies are fully booked for months out. This may mean that you’ll be on a waitlist for a little while… but during that time you can start browsing various finishes, make design selections and finalize your design services agreement. - Take lots of “before” pictures of the space so you can remember the transformation.
